Every participating artist is asked to talk about their connection to Pilsen. And if new to the neighborhood, to describe what drew them here.

This is what Colby shares with us:

"I have been involved in the Pilsen art scene since the early 1990's. I moved to my current location on 18th Street in 2003, the year the 18th Street Pilsen Open Studios began. I was drawn to Pilsen after studying in the Yucatan with my school, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Meeting Indigenous people through personal connections in the mountains of Chiapas, as well as the whole trip, changed my life forever and I felt a deep soul connection to Mexico and Mexican Art. In addition to the Mexican Arts community in Pilsen, I was attracted to the immigrant people and families who strive to create a better world. I value the old architecture built by the Czech people which creates a human scale and charm.

I have supported local pilsen artists at my gallery through honoring their work and giving them solo or group exhibitions. I have also brought work in from Latin America artist including a show with 22 Cuban artists, and artists from Europe to show local Pilsen people in their own neighborhood what is happening in the arts in other parts of the world to inspire and connect.

I believe the world needs more art and respect for the arts and artists to help humanity harmonize with each other and grow, helping to bring this about in my own individualized way is my life purpose."

ARTIST BIO & STATEMENT

Alfredo Díaz Lloréns presents his inaugural exhibition in the United States, Where The Heart Rules, at COLBY GALLERY. This exhibition explores his unique, energetic, multicolored works in Polychrome Marquetry. Classical marquetry applies pieces of wood veneer to a structure to form decorative inlay patterns, designs or pictures with a variety of natural wood tones or painted colors. Lloréns, however, transforms this technique with an explosion of joyful, organic, symbols and characters saturated in vibrant colors interacting in a cosmic sea of energy. Hand cut, interlocking wood forms finished in rich contrasting hues generate visionary worlds of sacred meaning and delight.

Born in Mexico City in 1967, Alfredo Díaz Lloréns currently has his home and studio in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Lloréns artistic training included formal European drawing and painting in Amsterdam, Netherlands, however it wasn't until he embarked on the study of wood carving in his native Mexico that his soul found its true creative calling. Impassioned by working with wood, Lloréns chose to specialize in the art of Polychrome Marquetry. A prolific and visionary artist, Lloréns has created over 900 dynamic colorful works of art in wood. Lloréns has exhibited throughout Mexico and internationally; his work is treasured by collectors world wide.

Artist Statement:

Where the Heart Rules
