5th Corona

José Luis was born in Michoacan, Mexico and grew up on the Southside of Chicago. Corona received his Associates in Design at the American Academy of Art and a BA in Interactive Multimedia Design at Columbia College in Chicago. He also studied photography abroad at Santa Reparata International School of Art under photographer Jay Wolke. Corona received a residency with acclaimed artist Guillermo Gomez-Peña + La Poncha Nostra that culminated in the Brown Sheep Project. He exhibited his graphic and fine artwork at the American Academy’s Student Art Exhibit, where he won 3rd place in Graphic Design/Illustration in ‘96 and 2nd place ’95. His assembled-art sculpture El Sol was featured on the cover of the American Academy’s summer newsletter in 1995. He also donated one of his works Rosa o Dinero to Creative Pride an organization that raises money for urban schools’ art program. This work was auctioned at Sothebys Chicago.

Corona has exhibited extensively throughout the past ten year in the Chicago Metro land area, i.e. Columbia College Chicago, Chicago Cultural Center, The Museum of Science and Industry and the Oak Park Art League. Corona has also exhibited with a Chicago Artist Group called Fluxcore were he has been a founding member, contributing artist and organizer. He has recently branched out and started curating art shows’ such as the “Ofrendas” the altar exhibition he did for Aguiree Duron Gallery. Recently, he volunteered to work for renowned artist Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s monumental installation exhibit, “The Gate” in Central Park, New York. One of 300 daily BA’s, they acted on Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s behave, as ambassadors to the public for “The Gate”.
