"Come see the dopest artists you've never heard of...YET!" - (Instructor Laura Gomez)

Laura Gomez is an illustrator and graphic designer based in Chicago. She has a bachelor's degree from the American Academy of Art and has worked in the arts for the last 15 years.

  • Casandra is a 7 th grade artist living in Chicago. She leans into pencil & charcoal. But often uses other mediums as well. She is interested in drawing everything and often goes into rabbit holes of humorous visual anecdotes. She loves traveling and she reads during her free time. She loves playing volleyball with her friends and is willing to learn how to play badminton.

  • Marlo is 13 years old and in 7 th grade. She was born in Chicago and has liked art for as long as she can remember. She likes books, music, school, sleeping, dreaming, fashion, playing volleyball, and being around friends. This is her first real art exhibit.

“I have always found art to be a really relaxing thing to do. It’s fun to be able to express myself when creating art, or even just drawing whatever comes to mind. I like using all mediums, but I particularly like sculpting, drawing with pencil/pen and collage. I get a lot of inspiration from

nature, and also things that I find beautiful or have some sort of deeper meaning. I also like to get inspiration from the internet or my friends/family. Some of my favorite things to draw art: hearts, stars, eyes, plants/flowers, and people.”

  • Navi is a 10 yr old 5 th grader at Sunnyside Elementary in Berkeley Illinois. Navi is a fire sign who likes to eat pizza and French fries. Navi is an inspiring artist who enjoys spending her time drawing her characters and developing different scenes that are interesting and allow her to try different techniques in shapes and design. Navi loves her two cats Gato and Meow Meow and draws inspiration for her character from lalaloopsy and the internet.

“I love Hello Kitty and have started a collection of all her characters and memorabilia. Hello kitty gives me expressiveness and imagination to develop my own characters. As my love for art has grown I have developed a liking to creepy and cute styles, my medium at the moment is markers and pencil but am focusing now on more animation and graphic design. My message to others who want to start art, draw what you want or like and focus on a goal.”

  • Nora is 10 years old and she is in 5 th grade. She is a self-taught artist and started drawing when she was five years old. She has two cats named Zigzag and Marmalade. She really likes reading, playing video games, and doing karate. She lives with her brother, mom, dad, and two cats.

“I usually draw with graphite pencils and mechanical pencils, but sometimes colored pencils. I like to draw portraits, eyes, and creepy things. Sometimes I make art based on my emotions. I also sometimes find things that look cool, so I draw them.”

  • Mason is a 5th grade student. He really enjoys coloring and drawing.

“They both make me feel relaxed and it’s so satisfying to do.”

He really enjoys sports like baseball, soccer, and basketball. He plays travel ball with my younger brother.

  • Rachel is 10 years-old, a city girl and loves Navy Pier and the color lavender. Rachel has a sister and a dog named Carly. She’s in 5 th grade and her favorite singer is Taylor Swift. Rachel loves to play volleyball. She also loves to play soccer. Her favorite foods are smash burgers (From Marz Brewing) and McDonalds 6 piece chicken nuggets. Rachel’s Favorite animals are horses and dogs. She’s very athletic and smart. She also loves to ride horses. She just loves going shopping & Rachel loves to draw with pencil and sketch. She loves seeing murals in the city. When Rachel first started drawing, it was at night. She said “Drawing just passes the time.”

  • Vicente is in 5 th grade and into comics and graphic novels.

“I love drawing and doodling in sketchbooks and notebooks, but I’m also learning digital art, painting, and sculpting. I go to a summer camp called Boys & Girls Club. I love playing dodge-ball and swimming in pools/water parks. I go to swim classes on Fridays and learning to do back-flips in the water without goggles :D .”
